September Team Report!
Posted by: Brink | Tuesday, September 27, 2005Can you believe September's almost over? Its not even cold enough to shred but snowboarders are out'n about getting their shred on.
Check out what some of the etnies/ThirtyTwo team riders are up to...
Leanne Pelosi won both Rider of the Year and Readers Choice at the Transworld 7th Annual Riders Poll. Chad Otterstrom who's also a flow rider won the Rider of the Year. Congratulations to both of them!
John Jackson recently got back from Japan terrorizing some shops with a few of his other colleagues from Planet Earth. He's on his way up to San Francisco for a contest somewhere in the city. If you haven't seen John's part in Standard Films (Paradox), you're missing out. Get the dvd and check out John's part, it's pretty sick.
Markku Koski is somewhere down unda'. He was last seen in Australia with the Quik team and then in New Zealand. He reported that he was having a great time skating and shredding when the weather and conditions were decent and having fun with some good friends. He'll be heading back to Finland for bit to figure out his game plan for the season.
Tyler Lepore recently drove down to Southern California to attend the premiere of Oakley's Community Project. He along with some of his good friends spent all last season filming all over the globe collecting some impressive yet creative lines in snowboarding. Tyler was also lurking in some obscure places around the Transworlds Riders Poll... Or was he? Ty will be on the never ending traveling circuit for the next month. He flew down to Southern California to attend the ThirtyTwo catalog photo shoot and then off to Seattle for a premiere for a bunch of kids and then he'll be off to Japan for a week, then back to Canada and then off to the East Coast of Canada. Good work Ty.
Benji Ritchie went back to Quebec to chill out with his fams for the time being. He'll be there for a few weeks catching up on some family time and then plans to head back to Whistler where he'll be hustling early winter. Make sure you check out the Big Blind at Whiteout films. Benji's video part pretty much explains his talents.
Janna Meyen ventured down to New Zealand to shred for a month or so. She's having such a good time down there she claims she doesn't want to come home! Maybe she's over doing the Vegemite? Who knows. Anyways, she's already committed to film all year long with the Volcom crew and is off to a good start.
Leanne Pelosi drove her new Volvo S50 down to Southern California a few weeks ago to attend the TW awards along with some of the other snowboarding premieres like the Misschief premiere AS if. She was so overwhelmed with winning two awards and keeping her stoke up that she lost her voice during the tradeshow. She chilled out for the time being until she graced her presence at the Hot Dawgs Rail Contest. She drove back to Whistler where she'll be getting ready to move into her new apartment in Vancouver. She's slated for a handful of interviews with Transworld Japan, Snowboard Canada, Fuel TV and Salt magazine this month. So be on the look out for her comments and insights from her successful year. Way to go L-Peezy!
Alexis Waite jumped on a plane right after the ASR tradeshow to attend a few video premieres in Europe supporting her video part in Misschief's "AS if". She was caught hanging out with some friends in Switzerland and then found herself wondering aimlessly in Cyprus. Yes Cyprus. She wanted to explore more of Europe but found herself in situations you wouldn't want to be in. Unfortunately, she had her rental car broken into and her purse along with her wallet and credit cards got stolen. They even stole her jeans and clothes. Luckily, they missed her passport and her return ticket back to Switzerland so she made it back in one piece. She's back in the States right now hoping to get caught up on some bills and some down time with her new pooch. She'll be heading to Whistler later this week to attend some premieres and then head down the West Coast on a Quik/Roxy RV tour making a few stops down the coast. If you're lucky maybe you'll see her along the way.
Wille Yli-Luoma just got back from visiting his daughter and family. He spent a couple of weeks hanging with Lilou (see lead photo) for her fifth birthday, yes fifth. Wille's back in Portland where he'll be attending a few premiere's in the North West and then heading to Colorado for some shop demos. Be on the look out for Wille's part in Mack Dawg's new release From___With Love.
As for the B-team riders, Laura Hadar and Keegan Valaika won big at the Hot Dawgs Rail Jam in Big Bear, CA. Laura and Keegan kept the crowd alive with their smooth yet aggressive styles. Keegan pretty much dominated over all the other competitors by mixing up his bag of tricks, stomping frontside 270's boardslides, to gaping the middle rail and airing over the staircase with his old school style mutes. Laura stepped it up with frontside 270 boardslides to her stylish back smith. Both of them took home a nice chunk of change keeping their stoke alive! Congratulations to both of them for kicking some arse.
Get ready cause the winter is just around the corner...

Lending a Helping Hand...

- etnies CEO Pierre Andre Senizergues and employees sending off their donation to the survivors of Hurricane Katrina
Today at the etnies warehouse in Lake Forest, CEO Pierre Andre Senizergues and his employees joined together in sending off their gift-in-kind donation of 5,000 pairs of shoes and 5,000 pieces of apparel to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.
In a semi truck filled to the brim, the wearable contribution will head from Orange County straight to devastated areas and into the hands of Hurricane Katrina survivors. Those touched by the natural disaster are still in vital need of the basics and etnies found an organization willing to make the connection.
While many nonprofits are collecting only monetary donations for Hurricane Katrina relief, the United Way’s funded organization Giving Children Hope has made the effort to accept any and all donations possible. The Orange County based organization aims to help children and their families gain self sufficiency and promises that “over 99% of all contributions provide direct aid to those who are helped!”
etnies and Giving Children Hope representatives worked together with forklifts to successfully load all 449 boxes on 16 pallets which totaled 9,091 pounds. In response to receiving a gift of this size, Giving Children Hope’s director of operations Kevin Turrill said, “We don’t see these kinds of gifts very often. I think it’s wonderful.”
Again Pierre Andre Senizergues displayed his dedication to helping those in need, especially when relating to children and young adults. He has answered the national call to action and furthered his support by agreeing to match all monetary donations made by his etnies employees. Senizergues responded, “As a company we were shocked by the amount of devastation that Hurricane Katrina left. It is not only a privilege to be in a position to help in a meaningful way, but it is our responsibility as a corporation to make a difference in the lives of those who have lost so much–even the shoes on their feet.”

Storbis Video Premier In Helsinki!
Posted by: Brink | Thursday, September 8, 2005
- Aleksi and Iikka
In Helsinki on Friday August 26th at the Bio Rex, about 500 people celebrated the new Storbis video and having a blast. Storbis puts the fun back into snowboarding, and you'll be cracking up when you watch what those whacky Scandinavian boys caught on tape. ThirtyTwo/etnies rippers Thomas Harstad, Harri Holmsten and Jussi Tarvainen have great parts in this new masterpiece.

- Editor-In-Chief Rasmus
The party after the premier was held on the terrace of the Bio Rex at Lasipalatsi, and fortunately the weather gods showed mercy and held back the rain ‘till the party was over. A lot of booze, friends, laughter, music and only one broken tooth rounded up a great evening.
In Europe, you can get a free Storbis DVD with the September issue of Onboard. There will be copies available in Japan as well.
Have a fun winter!

THE COMMUNITY PROJECT
Posted by: Brink | Tuesday, September 6, 2005Oakley, Inc. and Red Bull in conjunction with 1242 Productions today announced the upcoming release of The Community Project, a super 16mm and 35mm snowboarding film. Rather than the typical video format where each rider works towards an individual segment, this film is a group effort based around different locations and the lifestyle of snowboarding. The Community Project, takes the viewer on an action-packed adventure through many of the world’s best locations: New Zealand, Japan, Aspen, British Columbia, Jackson Hole, Norway, Alaska and Whistler/Blackcomb to name a few.
The film features top talent including: Travis Rice, JJ Thomas, Zach Leach, Tyler Lepore, Terje Haakonsen, Bryan Iguchi, Andy Finch, Kyle Clancy, Eero Ettala and Shaun White, and introduces up and coming riders such as Colin Langlois, Sammy Luebke, Pat Moore and others.
“The Community Project, to me is a breath of fresh air. Riding with people who are about snowboarding and bringing new ideas to the hill with a big emphasis on creative cinematography, on and off the hill," says etnies/ThirtyTwo proTyler Lepore. "The Community Project is the film that I have wanted to be apart of for years.”
Shot on Super 35mm and 16mm film, the production team includes Rich Goodwin a veteran cinematographer with more than nine years experience in snowboard filmmaking, accomplished editor and cinematographer Curt Morgan, and Circe Wallace and Travis Rice serving as producers.
The world premiere will take place on September 7 at the Oakley headquarters in Foothill Ranch, Calif. “The Community Project” will be sold by Oakley retailers, Ally distribution, Champion Visions, Method Media, and Platinum distribution. A world premiere tour is also slated to launch in the fall with dates and locations to be announced at a later date. Check out this teaser clip and check for premiere dates near you.
Wille Yli-Luoma At High Cascade!
Posted by: Brink | Thursday, September 1, 2005
- Willie shares a moment with winning photographer, Leenie!
With one of the biggest airs of the entire year as seen in Mack Dawg Productions’ soon to be released From ------ with Love, Wille Yli-Luoma just finnished (pun intended) one of the most fun sessions High Cascade and Mt. Hood has ever seen (July 28 – August 5). Since Wille is as talented behind the camera as he is in front, Wille gave all the campers disposable cameras provided by Fuji.
Wille didn’t give them any guidelines; he just wanted to see what type of imagery people would capture in the two days allotted. The result was 2700 images that Wille personally reviewed. After a long night of sorting through the High Cascade campers’ photos, Wille narrowed it down to 18 photos which he enlarged and displayed for all the campers and staff to see at an evening art show. What was at stake? Well, the photographer of the winning image had the once in a life time chance to have their chosen photo placed into a special one-off Wille Yli-Luoma K2 snowboard! Who else in the world gets to have their own photography showcased on a snowboard? That’s right, no one.

- Everyone likes their forehead signed.
After much self-debate, Wille had to choose the prized image based solely on his gut instinct. The winner: Leenie Crosswhite’s untitled self shadow photographed with a Fuji disposable camera using ambient light. “Photography is my life,” Leenie told Wille after she won. “I’ve looked up to Wille’s photography for so long that this is like a dream come true,” she continued. Adding to Leenie’s one-of-a-kind snowboard, she received a full outerwear package from Volcom www.volcom.com and a pair of boots from Thirty-Two.
As if that wasn’t enough, Wille had his hand in two of High Cascade’s annual Workshops: the Photo Workshop with NEMO’s Trevor Graves and the Video Workshop with Mack Dawg Productions’ Brad Kremer. Wille not only rode in front of all the students, but sat in on lectures, provided feedback from the professional riders’ perspective, and even presented the students with a slideshow of his own photography.

- The winning photo!

- A man and his art

- Some meaningful art that travelled across the US a few times before being hung on this wall.
On Wednesday, August 16, ThirtyTwo snowboard boots decided to host a gathering/art show/party/hipster fest in downtown Manhattan to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of ThirtyTwo, bid farewell to the summer of ’05 and say hello to the upcoming 2005/2006 season. You could say they were multitasking, perhaps even killing four birds with one stone—but hey, any excuse to party in New York City right?

- Boots!
In the little microcosm we call snowboarding, 10 years is an eternity. Companies come and go by the dozen and by the season—sometimes sooner, but ThirtyTwo’s decade of existence is a testament to their quality boots and staying power. And proudly displayed in the center of the studio was a boot chronology spanning ThirtyTwo’s ten-year span as a boot manufacturer, from their first model, the Lo-Cut, which was inspired off of the popular skateboard shoe and designed by owner/founder Pierre Andre Senizergues to their hot-off-the-press high performance ’05/’06 Vader.

- John Jackson with the other guest of honor, Tyler Lepore!
Loads of Manhattan’s finest snow/skate scenesters showed up to spread the love. ThirtyTwo/etnies pros Tyler Lepore and Wille Yli-Luoma like to get artsy behind a lens when they aren’t on the mountain, so each displayed their photography for all to see. Tyler has had art shows in NYC previously, but this was Wille’s freshman attempt. Both were stoked on the response their work got from onlookers and Wille even sold a few pieces after the show. What’s he gonna do with the money? Probably cover the shipping bill that accumulated as a result of his paintings being accidentally shipped across the country a few times and to a few wrong addresses the week prior to the show—good ‘ol courier services, I guess they figure its more exciting to keep people biting their nails and waiting until the last minute for packages.

- Art!
Teamates Alexis Waite, Leanne Pelosi, Benji Ritchie and John Jackson all came to support Wille and Tyler’s art extravaganza and guzzle free beers. By 10 pm, security started flashing the lights and demanding everyone depart the studio, the party moved to the uber hip and trendy Lotus club. Unfortunately, what happens in Lotus stays in Lotus—so the story ends here.
